How to read this data
Every count on this page is a reported incident loaded from Toronto Police Service open data — major crime indicators, shootings, homicides, bicycle thefts, and thefts from motor vehicles. Reported incidents are not the same as total crime: many offences are never reported, and TPS excludes some occurrence types from its public feeds.
Occurrence dates are published at day-level precision and locations are anonymized to the nearest intersection, so pins show approximate positions. New reports can take several days to appear in the public feed; BreakMap reloads the data three times daily.
Default map shading uses raw counts, which are not population-adjusted. The per-1,000-residents mode divides counts by 2021 census population from the City of Toronto neighbourhood profiles. A handful of custom areas have no census match and are marked accordingly.
Toronto crime map FAQ
- How current is this crime map?
- BreakMap reloads Toronto Police Service open data three times a day. The most recent occurrence date currently loaded is 2026-10-27. Police reports can take several days to appear in the public feed, so the latest day or two is always an undercount.
- What do the map colours mean?
- Neighbourhoods are shaded by how many reported incidents match your current time window and crime type filters — brighter means more reports. Switch to per-1,000-residents mode to adjust for population using 2021 census counts.
- What does 'per 1,000 residents' mean?
- It divides a neighbourhood's reported incident count by its 2021 census population, then multiplies by 1,000. It makes big and small neighbourhoods comparable, but note that daytime population, transit hubs, and commercial districts can push rates up in places where few people live.
- Which Toronto neighbourhood has the most reported crime?
- Over the last 30 days of loaded reports, Kensington-Chinatown has the most reported incidents (101). Golfdale-Cedarbrae-Woburn leads for break and enter. Rankings shift as new data loads, so check the map for the current picture.
- Why do these counts differ from news reports or police statistics?
- This map counts reported incidents published in TPS open data, which excludes some occurrence types, anonymizes locations to the nearest intersection, and lags official statistics. It is not a measure of total crime and should not be treated as a definitive safety score.
- Can I get alerts for my neighbourhood?
- Yes — open any neighbourhood page from the map and subscribe with your email to get notified when new incidents load there.
